Bookings should be made as far as possible in advance. Hotels require a deposit of 50% within 35 days. Allow a minimum of an extra 7 days for transfer of funds. It is expected that as from July 2006, Crater tours will be limited to half day (six hours). There is a 15% discount on most hotel rates during the low season of 1 April to 15 June.

Christmas and New Year Supplement $25 per person: 16 December to 7 January.
Serengeti National Park Entry $50 per person. Valid 24 hours.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area $30 per person. Valid 24 hours.
Ngorongoro Crater Vehicle Fee $100 per entry.

Tariffs are Full Board and based on a double room sharing. Single Room Supplement $35 per night. Children under 12, 50%.

A. NGORONGORO CRATER RIM HOTELS. Overlook the crater. Can be cold in July and August (3C). 100+ rooms.

Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge $ 95. South-east crater rim. Oldest and coldest of the lodges.
Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge $110. North-east rim. Sopa Hotels property.
Ngorongoro Serena Lodge $120. South-east rim. Serena Group of Hotels.
Ngorongoro Crater Lodge $550. South-east rim. Includes game drives. 24 luxury rooms.

B. SMALL PRIVATE LODGES. Half hour drive from Crater Rim. These are very good value and in very pleasant settings. Not as cold as the Crater Rim hotels and have the ambience of a lodge rather than a hotel.

Ngorongoro Farm House $125. Very good value. 20 minutes from Crater.
Ngorongoro Safari Lodge $130. Recommended. 35 minutes from Crater.
Plantation Lodge, Karatu $130. Recommended. German also spoken. 25 minutes from Crater.
Kifaru Lodge, Karatu $130. Recommended. German also spoken. 25 minutes from Crater.
Octagon Lodge, Karatu $ 60. Situated in Karatu Town. 30 minutes from Crater.

C. NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA. Ndutu Lodge is the only lodge bordering the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Serengeti National Park. It is an excellent base for safaris when the migratory herds are in the south Serengeti (January to May).

D. SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK LODGES AND CAMPS. Tourist hotels of 100+ rooms. Resident herds of wildlife are year round. Best months for seeing the big herds of migratory animals are given below. If going on a Balloon Safari ($400), it is recommended to stay at one of the central Serengeti lodges.

Lobo Wildlife Lodge $ 95. North Serengeti. Architecturally impressive. Recommended July to October.
Serena Lodge $120. West Central Serengeti. Big herds May-June and December.
Sopa Lodge $110. South central Serengeti. Big herds January to June and December.
Seronera Wildlife Lodge $95. Central Serengeti. Big herds May-June and December.

E. SERENGETI CAMPS. Highly recommended for birders and those interested in wildlife. Tents are spacious - larger than the lodge rooms - and have en-suite bathrooms. All camps have a dining room and bar and facilities for recharging camera batteries.

1. De Luxe Camps. Full Board $80-$90. Very good value. Small, comfortable camps. Situated just outside the park thus no restrictions on walking and night game drives. These camps have a lot of wildlife and at Ikoma Bush Camp the big herds pass through in June-July and October-early December. Tariffs are per person full board.

Ikoma Bush Camp $80. North-West central Serengeti. Night game drives and walks.
Kijereshi Camp $90. West Serengeti. Near road to Mwanza.
Malagasi Camp $165. West Serengeti.
Serengeti Stop Over $45. West Serengeti just outside Ndabaga Gate.

2. Luxury Camps. Top end of the market. All are situated in the Serengeti National Park.

Western and Southern Serengeti

Grumeti River Camp $500. Western Serengeti. A Conscorp property. Includes game drives.
Kirawira Camp          $180. Western Serengeti. 26 tents. A Serena Property.
Kusini Camp            $210. Big herds nearby from January to May. Situated amongst rock outcrops in southern Serengeti. Excellent game viewing in area from January to May.

Northern Serengeti

Klein's Camp        $500. Northern Serengeti. A Conscorp property. Includes game drives.
Migration Camp   $290. Peak Season.
Migration Camp $210. High Season. Spacious tent has 45 sq.m floor space, wide verandah deck and placed to provide privacy and and blend in with natural surroundings. Lounge, cigar bar, restaurant, sundecks and swimming pool perched among rock outcrops.
